By Adam Poulopoulos A flurry of last-minute entries left organisers with a near-sellout field at this year’s Forrest GrapeRide. About 2300 rode in Saturday’s event, short of the 2500-capacity, but more than organisers expected. About 90 percent of competitors were from out-of-town, close to the normal figure. Event organiser Duncan McKenzie says he was happy with the day as a whole. Continued page 2 GrapeRide virgins jump into a barrel full of grapes at the event on Saturday.

Turnout higher than expected Continued from page 1 “It was a darn good field after the dire predictions of the weather and a whole lot of other things. “It was pleasing, but it was a shame there was rain on the course.” After negative feedback over last year’s 42-kilometre taster course led to much of this year’s drop-off in attendance, McKenzie says there was a focus on improving that part of the event. “Marlborough Roads stepped up and delivered a great taster course. “We asked logging truck drivers to look after the gravel section on the Tua Marina Track…I saw it in action – trucks travelling at very slow speeds and essentially rolling the track for us. “We’re confident we’ve ridden out a bit of a rough patch with the taster and the problem is solved.” As usual, 100 grape-crushing virgins jumped into a barrel of grapes and crushed the fruit, which will be bottled and given to next year’s competitors. In the barrel among the grapes was Peter Preddy, an 82-year-old GrapeRide veteran who not only rode earlier in the day, but has ridden in every event since its inception. “We’re thrilled with that. It was great to have him up there – we’ve never really had a guest of honour,” McKenzie says. “At 82 years old, to still be doing that is a great achievement.”

Ariane Pritchard and Nikki Jacoby after exiting the barrel.

Keeva Stott, 6, and Debbie Cain.

McKenzie says the main negative aspect of the day was the weather. Rain made the Queen Charlotte Drive slippery for cyclists.

Busy Saturday for medical staff By Adam Poulopoulos Greasy roads have been labelled as the principal factor in what was a demanding Forrest GrapeRide for medical staff. Blenheim St John Station manager Rebecca Lee says 43 event cyclists were treated on Saturday, with 10 transported to Wairau Hospital by

ambulance. Injuries ranged from minor to serious, and included abrasions, fractures and head injuries. Lee says in her experience of working the event, it was one of the most hectic. “It was pretty busy. It’s up there. The weather was a factor – it got quite

greasy for them. “It was a busy day trying to get through that work and the normal work in the community but we got there. “We had huge resources and we planned well in advance.” She says there was no motorist involvement in the injuries as far as

she knew. One change from previous years was the points where cyclists were injured. This year, most injuries occurred at Wedge Point, in Shakespeare Bay, where in previous years, most took place at either Spring Creek or Okaramio.

Love the bond for 65 years By Jacob Page Ron Mills “would crawl over broken glass” for his wife of 65 years, Noela. The couple celebrate the milestone today and will enjoy a dinner with friends after having an early celebration in Christchurch with some of their 12 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. “They breed like rabbits,” Ron says of the extended family. “Don’t ask me what all their names are, neither of us can keep up.” “Ron says he knew Noela was his future wife after their second date. The couple met in 1947 at a dance at the Grovetown Hall, Ron was 19 and Noela 18. “I don’t think we’d ever laid clappers on each other before then which is something since we’ve lived in Blenheim all our lives. Ron was certain but Noela took a bit longer. She wanted to be married over Easter but that was not allowed so they did it a week earlier instead.

Omaka train line open The Omaka train line will be running from Friday to Sunday this Easter weekend. Trains will be running from Brayshaw Park to Omaka from 9am to 5pm over the three days. Also, Air Show trains leave Beaver Station at Riverside Park in central Blenheim for Omaka at 9am and return at 4.30pm.

Noela and Ron Mills celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary today

The secret to their longevity is simple. “We love each other.... I’d do anything for her,” Ron says. Noela is partially blind but still enjoys

cooking a roast meal on a regular basis, while Ron, a motor mechanic by trade and former Marlborough Boys’ College caretaker, still drives regularly.

Backing the Black Caps By Jacob Page Mitchell Starc should have been ticketed for going at 150kph in the Melbourne CBD. The start of many quality bits of banter from the Melbourne Cricket Ground as New Zealand fell at the final hurdle of the Cricket World Cup. In reality, Sunday’s seven wicket loss to Australia was spent hoping after that Starc stunner smashed the stumps of Brendon McCullum in the first over. The seagulls circled above as if like sharks as New Zealand tried to fight back in front of a large contingent of Kiwis that helped the crowd reach a record 93,013. This was a trip, at considerable expense, I might add that had to be made once Grant Elliott hit that stunning six against South Africa. The atmosphere was amazing. There were plenty of ‘Kiwi’ chants. I was sitting in the second tier

Olympic stand surrounded by Kiwis and a couple of Aussies. The bloke next to me had flown in from Singapore that morning and succumbed to jet lag late in the game and left for a bar. Next to him was a guy in a tricoloured London New Zealand cricket blazer that made him look like toothpaste. He delighted at yelling at Ross

Taylor, begging him not to run out Elliott for the sake of the game. An Aussie supporter who lived in Auckland pointed out how big the MCG boundaries were compared to NZ. A forward defence from Taylor was met with a call of ‘That would have gone out of Eden Park.’ My desperate attempt to talk up the hitting prowess of Carey An-

derson and citing his world record fastest century at Queenstown also gained little traction “Are you kidding me? ” He says. “You could fit the whole of Queenstown in the MCG.” Elliott received some sledging from the Aussies after his facesaving 83. The crowd enjoyed it but weren’t impressed when Kiwi quick Matt Henry celebrated the wicket of Australian captain Michael Clarke when the game was already won. You have to love the double standards. Despite the lopsided finish those who could shook hands at the end and basked in what they had witnessed. For me, six flights and 13 hours of travel organised at next to no time was totally worth it even though the match did not deliver the dream outcome that had enticed me to do it.

Helicopter callouts The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter had a busy day on Monday, called out twice in the Marlborough region. At 12.50pm it was dispatched in response to a patient in Picton having a serious medical event. This patient was flown back to Nelson Emergency department for further care. The helicopter was then immediately responded back to Wairau Hospital to uplift a patient suffering from suspected bends after a diving incident in the Marlborough Sounds. The 32-year-old Blenheim man was flown to Christchurch Hospital to the decompression chamber.

Wilson out on parole The ‘Beast of Blenheim,’ Stewart Murray Wilson, has been released on parole in Wanganui. Wilson is being monitored by GPS, after being released to a home on the Wanganui Prison grounds. He was granted parole in December, and the ruling took effect on Monday.

“The only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is the way in which we use them.” Inspiring words that pretty much sum up the life of Awatere woman Jac Lockington. Jac is not only a successful businesswoman, financial advisor and mortgage broker, but she is also someone who knows what it is like to have lived with depression - and come out the other side! She sat down with reporter Celeste Lodewyk to share her experience and to show others that you can ‘beat the blues’ and continue on to have a great life. Asked what advice she could offer other people experiencing depression, whether it be in the early or later stages, she says to “take action”. “However small, it is the most valuable piece of advice I can give to anyone suffering from depression. “That one step, whether it be making a doctor’s appointment or confiding in a trusted person, is the beginning of them taking control of their lives again,” she says. For Jac it has been her sense of humour that was her “saving grace”, keeping her looking forward to new challenges and propping her up when she was feeling down. “I can make jokes about anything,” she laughs.

‘Mayor of Redwood’ turns 90 One of Blenheim’s oldest residents celebrated an important milestone with family and friends last week. He also played rugby for the Moutere Rugby Club and brews his own beer. Ron married Beth on 15th January 1949, and celebrated his Diamond Wedding anniversary in 2009. Better broadband for rural Marlborough Chorus has finished work on new fibre-fed broadband cabinets in Blackwood Bay and Mahakipawa Arm, meaning local residents can now benefit from better broadband services in the area. Work in the area was completed on Monday, and follows on from the completion of work in Blenheim recently. Chorus general manager of infrastructure Ed Beattie says access to better broadband makes a significant difference to the lives of rural New Zealanders. “Chorus has always been passionate about improving rural connectivity throughout New Zealand. That’s why we are pleased to be able to deliver improved broadband to the residents of Blackwood Bay and Mahakipawa Arm. “Better broadband helps rural businesses connect easily to the world and run applications from cloudbased services, reducing IT costs and improving business resilience. “In practical terms for rural businesses, such as farms, this means better connection to services like livestock improvement records and markets overseas, as well as improving time management through online purchasing. Technology plays a big part in modern farming and now residents in Blackwood Bay and Mahakipawa Arm can be part of that.” Communications minister Amy Adams says she is happy to see the work completed. “I’m thrilled that thanks to the Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative and Chorus, Blackwood Bay and Mahakipawa Arm now have access to faster broadband and the economic and social benefits this will bring. “Reliable access to the internet at home and at work and better mobile coverage where you are means better business tools, more ways to connect with customers and suppliers, new technologies for precision agriculture to explore, as well as more incentives for young people to stay in the area – these are some of the opportunities for your community.” The work in Blackwood Bay and Mahakipawa Arm is part of Chorus’ involvement in the Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative. As part of this work, Chorus is installing about 1200 fibre-fed cabinets to rural areas throughout New Zealand.

Spending it at home. Just quiet time I hope.

I might be going to the Air Show, and failing that, probably fishing if the weather is good.

I’m working at Countdown. I get Friday and Sunday off.

Just visiting family and catching up, and I’m amazed at how much Blenheim has progressed.

I might go for a hunt. That will probably be about it.

Dear Ed, I see Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith fears traffic snarls with the coming use of Cook Strait rail ferries carrying greater numbers of vehicles. Now Stuart can focus his attention on the need for a bypass for southbound traffic east of Blenheim. He can convince his transport minister of the need and tell the Marlborough Council to

wake up and show some foresight. Everyone sees the merit of a bypass but council. Do we have a strong mayor and a foresighted council? Do they realise the trucks rumbling down Grove Road and Main Street will be largely gone plus ferry traffic cars? Grove Road bridge no longer a problem. “Wake Up”

Dear Ed, The new theatre building puts Clubs of Marlborough in the shade. The theatre has been described as a ‘monstrosity’ and ‘Sowmans folly’. Did the council and planners not consider the ‘blotting out of the sun’ to C of M?

Dear Ed, With escalating cost now at $20 million for this ill-conceived project. Bearing in mind the council’s promise of thousands of dollars annually to assist with maintenance and running cost’s, plus as I understand it, the council has agreed to underwrite the whole project cost overruns. Now is the time for the council to publish the amount of money this council has to find to honour these committments it has made. We do not want ‘it is commercially sensitive’ claptrap, this debt will be paid for with money taken from the ratepayer’s pocket, as it will be the ratepayer paying they have every right to be informed of the total sum amount this council has committed them to. A response and an explanation would be appreciated. Mike Dietrich

A big thank you Dear Ed, Recently I had a bad fall, was taken to hospital and in hospital had a cardiac arrest. I would like to give an extremely grateful thank you from my family and myself to Bupa who acknowledged my medical alarm call and got the ambulance and family to me within ten minutes. To the St John ambulance medics they were marvelous both with medical attention and care. To the doctor and staff of The Wairau Emergency Department a huge thank you. There is no doubt they saved my life and within an hour I was on the helicopter to Nelson, for me and my family you are top of the tops. Also to the medical staff and coronary care unit there for looking after me so well, again a very big thank you to you all. Jim Park

Fishy goings-on Dear Ed, I saw Terry Tarakihi’s letter and felt I should express my agreement. What is going on with the Marlborough cod shambles and the new group Marine Futures. Who set up Marine Futures? Who picked the trustees? Where is the proper consultation by both? One Sunday (awkward day for many) in Picton is not consultation. What about Blenheim? What about those from outside Marlborough who own Sounds properties or holiday here? Do the powers-that-be really want to know our views? A good question is who funded Marine Futures? The Auckland visitors, fees, accommodation, travel etc must have been paid by someone or some body. All for a “babble-fest” as Terry described it. Did the rate-paying public fund it? Well did they MDC? “Recco Fisher”

Smart and connected Former New Zealand hockey representative Barry Maister was part of the New Zealand Olympic Team which won gold in Montreal in 1976. Now based in Picton, he splits his time between volunteering for the International Olympic Committee and chairing two Picton community groups. He spoke to Adam Poulopoulos. Sport has always been part of Barry Maister’s life. Born into a family of hockey players, he was selected for four Olympic Games, and is perfectly placed to see the changes in sport over the years. When New Zealand beat Australia 1-0 to win gold in 1976, it could not have been further removed from events four years previously. Barry also attended the 1972 Munich Games, memorable for the massacre of 11 Israeli soldiers by Palestinian group Black September. He has been approached by a documentary filmmaker, and will soon head to New York to film for the project. “The Germans were trying to make a very friendly Games after the War, and security was so slack,” he says. “We were right next to the Israeli quarters, and I remember looking out and seeing a terrorist there. “We got people into the village by putting them in tracksuits, and there were people climbing over fences.” In 1976 he says security was tighter, and it was the first time he had seen athletes subjected to testing. “Before we got our medals we had to wait backstage while two of our team were tested for drugs. “We played hard, but we played fair. We didn’t have the pressure of money and people playing for contracts.” Outside sport Barry has a background in education. For nearly 30 years he was a teacher or principal at high schools in Christchurch. In 2001 he relocated to Wellington to become secretary-general of the New

Zealand Olympic Committee, but with an increased interest in the international side of the Olympics he became an IOC member in 2010, and moved to Picton with wife Cheryl. Barry spends a third of the year travelling the world for the IOC, but is also involved in local projects. He is chair of the Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary Committee and Picton Smart and Connected. He says the Smart and Connected group, which was founded late last year, was about giving Picton a coherent voice. “There’s probably a feeling Picton hasn’t got what it deserved, and council says it isn’t speaking as one voice. “I couldn’t believe it when I came here – it was very ‘them and us,’ Picton v Blenheim. We’re only one little region. “Whenever I go overseas I say I’m from Marlborough and people say ‘that’s the wine place.’ “That’s important but with the Clifford Bay decision made Picton has a great opportunity to advance.” He says the group should have a strategic vision by the end of the year, and he hopes to emphasise Picton’s status as a maritime village, and its ecological and off-road walking resources as part of it. He says he is glad he made the decision to move to Picton. “We’d holidayed here for many years and when I left the NZOC we thought ‘the family’s in the South Island, we love coming here and all the work I’m doing is overseas.’ “I’m incredibly lucky. I’ve got skills and interests I can pursue at this time of my life and I’m doing it in a place I love dearly. “I look out (of my window) every day and ask ‘how could you not love it?”

FASHION FLAIR Curb your excitement... the 1970s are back If the recent American fashion week events are anything to go by, it’s safe to say that the 1970s fashion era is back. Reintroducing suedes and flared designs, retro and Bohemian styles into 2015, this year is set to showcase plenty of daring fun. And why are we loving it? The 70s was about groove, billowing stripes, lightweight dresses and velvet. And who could forget the turtlenecks? You won’t

now because they have made their way back onto fashion catwalks. But most importantly the 70s look for 2015 is about pushing the taste limits and having some fun. Dare to be bold! Right: Fashion shows around the world have exploded with psychedelic colours and styles from the 1970s.

Warm tones that sizzle Start growing out your locks because long hair is in for 2015. As for colours, if you are freshly out of ideas for this season then simply take some inspiration from the A-listers that we so often admire onscreen, on the catwalk and in the glossy magazines. Whether you want an all-over dye, subtle highlights or simply ombre - here are some tips for what shades are hot for 2015. Warm brown colours emerged as a pretty potent look this year. That’s why we’re all witnessing the A-list crowd warming up deep browns and darkening their blonde. Cameron Diaz is a perfect illustration. Rich auburn tones are a serious envy (anyone thinking of Emma Stone right now?) so are the blonde nailing celebrities. The Platinum shade that January Jones is rocking around is simply to die for. If you’re in the mood for a little drama, why not go a complete colour change. Reese Witherspoon certainly pulled it off. She went from blonde to dark brown. If you’re going for an instant full look update, new hair hue is simply the perfect way to do it and get away with it. Just be careful and try to complement your eye colour and skin tone with your new shade. Bold colours have grown in popularity recently. Pioneers of this trend are certainly Nicole Richie and Chloe Norgaard. Their ‘dos are ever-changing, and speak for

Bags that send you into a spin Consider this the perfect time to start drafting your spring wish list. The season’s best bags are giving us a few new looks to consider, especially with the return of a few old favourites. Thankfully, the ease of the bucket bag and our trusted cross-body carryalls aren’t going anywhere, while the tote bag just got a fresh coat of paint. As for the rest, it’s a mix of ladylike essentials and an innovative spin on the daytime clutch.

MASLIN: Tony and Bonny (Hapakuku) would like to announce the arrival of Jada Megan Maslin to the world, on March 29 2015 at 5:37am at Wairau Hospital. Big thanks to Sue, Jen and the lovely helpful staff in the maternity ward.

HARRISON: Big brother George is proud to announce the safe arrival of his little brother ‘Boris’ on March 25, 2015 at 8:57am at Wairau Hospital. Special thanks to Cathy, Tania, Sue, Mandy and the theatre team. Mum and baby doing well.

Weddings

Baby shower gift ideas With so many gifts available on the market for new mums and their babies, it can be hard to know what is the best, most useful and which will be the most appreciated. So, in order to lend a helping hand, here is a guide for some of the most popular presents to gift both mum and bubs. Gifts for the newborn Anything practical for the newborn is bound to be a winner – after all, it will definitely get used, save Mum and Dad money, and unlikely be something that the baby grows out of for quite some time. Think along the lines of bottles, dummies, sterilisers, wash clothes, wipes and nappies, and you probably can’t go too far wrong. It’s also a good idea to

think outside of the initial baby bubble and consider what might be practical and appreciated as a gift for babies as they grow. For this you could look at teething rings, rattles, stacking cups, picture books, outfits that are larger in size than newborn and even sleep aids. For a more personal gift,

an inscribed picture frame, a baby book or a soft cuddly toy are great options. Special blankets are also a nice option, particularly considering these often become the first comforter that a baby becomes attached to. Gifts for mum As with baby, gifting the new mum something

RICHES: Amelia and Chris are pleased to announce the safe arrival of their second baby boy, Oliver Orlando Riches, 7lb 9oz, on March 29, 2015 at 2:11am. A baby brother for Coben.

that’s practical can be more appreciated than your standard box of chocolates, champagne or bunch of flowers – although those certainly still have their place too! But imagine the joy on a new mum’s face when you tell her that for the next week or two she is receiving home cooked meals delivered straight to her door, a cleaner has been organised to maintain her house, and that she is booked in for a spa and facial while you baby-sit. It’s also a nice idea to consider something for mum that can assist her with the transition to motherhood and bonding with her new baby, such as vouchers to learn baby massage or to attend baby yoga lessons.

BERRY: Steven Berry and Katrina King were married at the home of Katrina’s parents, Lynnette and Colin King on March 28th by celebrant Leonie Welsh. The ceremony was witnessed by close family and friends. Photo: Simon Greenwood - Marlborough Wedding Photography.

Dining out for Easter The Easter Air Show means thousands are descending on Blenheim this weekend, and bars, restaurants, cafes and wineries around the Marlborough region are going to be making sure your tribe doesn’t go hungry or thirsty. If you feel like a drink, coffee or a sit-down meal in Blenheim, somewhere like Dolce or The Speights Ale House might be for you. Centrally located in The Forum, Dolce uses its wood-fired oven to make some of the best pizzas in town. Dolce is open until late on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. At Springlands, not far from Air Show central at Omaka, the Ale House is open every day from 8am, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with no surcharge all weekend. Looking to cater to a big group, Bamboo Garden is your kind of place. With a massive menu and both

sit-down and takeaway options, Bamboo Garden is open for dinner from Friday to Monday, and lunch on Saturday. If you like wineries, you could hardly be in a better spot. Driving around the region and choosing your preferred spot is always fun, but one of the better ones is

Double wins gold, breaks record at Maadi Cup

Sport inbrief

By Adam Poulopoulos A gold medal in the boys under-18 lightweight double sculls capped off an exciting meet for the Marlborough Boys’ College rowing crews. The crew of Campbell Stevens and Jordan Gasson rowed to victory in six minutes and 48 seconds, just under two seconds ahead of second-placed Wellington College. The pair also broke the Maadi Cup record by four seconds. The medal completed a meet that saw MBC narrowly miss out on bronze in the under-18 coxed four event, the Springbok Shield. They finished fourth in 6:34.35, 10 milliseconds behind Christs College. They also picked up fifth in the under-18 coxed eight, the flagship event at the Maadi Campbell Stevens and Jordan Gasson. GYMNASTICS The Blenheim Gymnastics Club on Opawa Street is on track to reopen later this month following a period of seismic strengthening. The club is planning to have an open day from 1-4pm on Sunday, April 19.

RUGBY Central have beaten Moutere 24-12 to become the only team to register two wins from two in the Marlborough division one competition. In the other game, Harlequins beat Renwick 65-27.

Marlborough riders prosper Nikita Gane, here pictured with Freddy Gane and Jonty, eight weeks, was the first woman home on the Forrest GrapeRide taster course over the weekend. Her time of one hour, nine minutes and 55 seconds was good enough for third overall. Lucy Trollope and Hannah Lucas, both also of Blenheim, were the third and fourth women finished in the category respectively. All up, 327 riders took part in the taster course. In other Marlborough results, Georgia Catterick was the third

Sean O’Neill was third in the magnum in five hours, 35 minutes and three seconds, while in the GrapeRide proper, Mitchell MacKenzie Mol was fourth overall, and Kate Harper of Blenheim was the third woman over the line.

HARRIERS The Marlborough Harriers have two pack runs coming up this week. One leaves from the clubrooms at 6pm tomorrow night, and the other takes in the Riverlands Loop on Saturday. Runners are asked to meet at the Riverlands Community Hall at 1:45pm for a 2pm start. For more information visit the Marlborough Harriers website.

SQUASH Megan Craig and Christchurchbased Chris van der Salm were the open women’s and men’s winners respectively at the Fairweathers Marlborough Squash Open over the weekend.

Smooth sailing for Marlborough Marlborough’s sailing crews came away with the Top of the South Trophy at the 420 college team sailing ‘Top of the South’ regional regatta in Picton over the weekend. They notched a 17-10 win over their Nelson counterparts over the three-day meet. Only three of the four round-robin rounds were completed as the regatta was affected by light winds on all three days.

Ten college teams from around the South Island competed at the regatta, and Marlborough Boys’ College came away with the overall victory. Queen Charlotte College finished third in the gold fleet, while Marlborough Girls’ College were fourth in the silver fleet. Six of the ten teams head to Taupo to sail in the team sailing nationals later in the month.
